Prep Sports: Islanders Football Prepare for Newport, Fall Sports Get Underway

Nearly all of Mercer Island High School's athletes are in action this week.

Football 

The varsity football team did not wait long to get involved in a dramatic game in the 2011 season. Mercer Island on Saturday night that saw the Islanders rally for 20 points in the final six minutes to tie the game, only to lose it on a blocked extra point. Quarterback gained 461 total yards in the game, rushing for four touchdowns and passing for another and looked the top recruit he is after a shaky first half. Wide receiver Brent Tsang caught eight passes for 125 yards in the loss.

Next up for Mercer Island is 4A Newport. Newport opened its season with a 43-34 win over a scrappy Interlake team on Friday night. Newport actually trailed the 2A school at halftime, but a strong second half led it to victory. Quarterback Isaac Dotson is a dual-threat for Newport.

That game kicks off at 7 pm on September 9 at Newport High School in Bellevue.

Girls Soccer 

The Islanders girls soccer team begins its 2011 schedule with back-to-back tough opponents. Mercer Island lost last night at home, 1-0 to defending 3A state champion Seattle Prep on Tuesday and will host 4A Skyline on Thursday. Skyline spent part of last season ranked number one in the nation and begins the season ranked third in the state by the Seattle Times. Seattle Prep is ranked fifth in 3A.

Boys Golf 

Boys Golf lost to Bellevue on Tuesday and head into a golf tournament this afternoon against Liberty, Mt. Si and Interlake at Maplewood Golf Course.  They’ll play Liberty again Sept. 12 at Maplewood before facing Bellevue in a home match Sept. 15.

Girls Volleyball 

The girls varsity team begins play Wednesday, Sept. 7 at the KingCo Jamboree at Interlake High School, before facing Lake Washington High School Thursday, Sept. 8 and Juanita, Sept. 12 in Kirkland. Their first home game is Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against Interlake.

Cross Country 

The Islander distance runners will race Bellevue, Juanita, Lake Washington, Liberty, Mount Si and Sammamish today at Lake Sammamish State Park before heading to Maple Valley this weekend for an invitational meet with Tahoma High School on Sept. 10. Conference 3A racing gets underway Sept. 14 at Luther Burbank Park against Interlake and Lake Washington High School.

Boys Tennis, Water Polo and Girls Swim & Dive all begin their season next week.
