Rain City Water Polo Athletes Take Center Stage at State

Members of Mercer Island-based Rain City Water Polo Club were among the state's top performers in prep competition this year.

Friday, May 11th marked the conclusion of the 2012 Washington State High School women’s season at the University of Washington’s Pavilion Pool. Several Rain City athletes walked away with all-state honors, including the State MVP award.

Rain City nearly pulled off a sweep of the First-Team All-State selections, as six of seven positions went to Rain City athletes. Juniors Sara Simpson, Olivia Mulholland and Ellen Peterson represented Newport High School on the first team. Senior Ava Klein and junior Mirei Yasuda of Roosevelt High School joined the Newport trio on the First-Team. Senior Mikayala Fletcher of Mercer Island High School rounded out the First-Team squad.

In addition to earning First-Team All-State, Simpson garnered State MVP honors after leading Newport High School to the title.

Earning Second-Team All-State honors were senior goal keeper Darya Farivar and utility player Clare Liddell of Roosevelt. Senior goal keeper Dani Osman of Mercer Island and sophomore center Helena Klein of Roosevelt earned Third-Team All-State.

After guiding Mercer Island to a third-place finish in his first year as head coach of the women’s program, received Coach of the Year honors.

Newport – 1st
Roosevelt – 2nd
Mercer Island  – 3rd
Shorewood – 4th
Bainbridge Island – 5th
