Youthful Islanders Win Age Division at 'Escape From the Rock' Triathlon

Last weekend's local triathlon featured several top-finishes from local Islander youth.

A third-place finish overall 15-year-old by David Conger, Jr. was one of several top-finishes by Mercer Islanders in their age divisions out of over 300 racers in Mercer Island's Escape from the Rock Triathlon on Sunday, Sept. 8.

David Conger finished first-place in the Boys 15-16 Division with a speedy finish of 1:00:18, just 3 minutes behind triathlon winner Jack Toland (57:16).

The triathlon featured a half-mile swim at Luther Burbank Park, a 12-mile out-and-back bike ride along the center lanes of I-90, and a 2.5-mile run along Luther Burbank's jog path.

Among the top finishers, 11-year-old Sophia Coco from Mercer Island won the Girls 11-12 Division with a final race time of 1:19:17, followed closely by fellow Islander Ellie Bailey in second place, at 1:22:51.

Islander Jake Headrick finished second-place in the Boys 11-12 Division with a time of 1:17:54 to Bellevue's Blake Ueda, who finished with a time of 1:14:27.

Nathaniel Nichol also placed second in the Boys 13-14 Division with a finishing time of 1:22:51.
