Thunder and hail hit Mercer Island and other parts of Puget Sound around 10:30 a.m. Friday. What happened to Mercer Island and the Seattle area's pleasantly hot weather and sunshine? And will there be rain for Mercer Island's Summer Celebration weekend?

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms struck Friday from Newcastle (just to the east of Mercer Island) up north to Poulsbo and Quilcene and — while it's sunny at the moment —  there's a 70 percent chance the thunderstorms will continue through the rest of the day.

On Saturday, Mercer Island's Summer Celebration might get a little wet with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms overnight and a 30 percent chance of stormy weather during the day, with highs in the upper 70s.

So, is the sun coming back?

The National Weather Service posted this this morning:

An upper low over Western Washington today will slowly drift southeast tonight and Saturday. The upper low will bring a risk of showers or thunderstorms to much of the are through tonight. Another upper low will move into the area Sunday night keeping the low level onshore flow pattern intact and the risk for unsettled weather over the mountains into the first half of next week.

"Unsettled" means that the atmosphere will be conducive to precipitation -- i.e., possible rain and hail -- again on Sunday.

Right now, the weather service is showing a forecast of cloudy days through next Thursday.

However, temperatures are expected to be in the high 70s, so at least it won't be cold.
