Flash Family Inspirational Award is Looking for a Few Good Seniors

If you know a senior citizen on Mercer Island who is making a difference, consider nominating them for the Flash Family Inspirational Award.

Attention all seniors active in the Mercer Island community.

Thanks to long-time Island resident Phil Flash, there's now an award for seniors who volunteer on Mercer Island and help to make it a better place to live.

Each year, the Flash Family Inspirational Award (FFIA) honors a Mercer Island senior adult who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership and who possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others.  The award is open to any 55+ senior engaged in an Island activity or sport.  Seniors may be nominated for their contributions to the sport or activity for their role in the area of organizing, actively promoting or participating.

The award was initiated by Phil Flash with a seminal donation to fund the annual award through the use of investment dividends.  Management of these funds is through the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Foundation.

The FFIA Award consists of a cash prize, the recipients name engraved on the perpetual trophy plaque located at the Community Center at Mercer View, and a small gift related to the recipient’s interests.

After the June 10 deadline, the nominations will be reviewed and the recipient chosen by a selection committee established by the Department of Youth and Family Services Director.  The committee will include a Mercer Island senior who is a member of the Mercer Island Senior Advisory Board, a staff member from the department of Parks and Recreation and Mercer Island Youth and Family Services, and a member of the MIYFS Foundation Board.

The winner will be announced at the Mercer Island’s Farmer’s Market Senior Day and will participate in Summer Celebration as a Home Town Hero of the Summer Celebration! parade.

Entry forms can be found on the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services website, or picked up at their offices.
