Volunteers Sought for Summer Celebration! on Mercer Island

"Green Gurus" are needed to support activities and trash recycling efforts, and the city plans to thank volunteers with commemorative t-shirts and through an ad in the local paper.

The Mercer Island hometown summer festival, Summer Celebration! "Spirit of the Olympics," is only one month away and event coordinators with Parks and Recreation are asking for volunteers, according to a city press release.

The July 14-15 event offers many unique volunteer opportunities including providing support for arts and crafts activities, the Olympic Village games, the parade, and, new this year, "Green Gurus."

With a focus on sustainability, Summer Celebration! is recruiting at least 50 Green Gurus (sustainability volunteers) to supervise the compost/garbage/recycle stations. As part of the City's sustainability efforts, it will support food vendors in providing compostable and recyclable serve-ware products. Green Gurus will be stationed throughout the event to help event participants dispose of their trash appropriately.

Volunteer shifts are available on Saturday July 14 for both day and evening times and Sunday July 15 for day shifts only. T-shirts will not be for sale this year to the public, so the only way to get one is to volunteer.
