The Mercer Island Police Department's mission is to uphold the community's reputation as one of the safest places in the state, for both residents and visitors alike. In 2010, Police Chief Ed Holmes led a department of 32 sworn officers, three civilians and numerous volunteer-supported public safety operations on a $5.5 million budget.
Surrounded by the waters of Lake Washington, Mercer Island is also the only Eastside city to support a marine patrol unit. Marine patrols are particularly visible in summer months and during the annual SeaFair festivites near the Island's shores.
