QFC (North End)
206-230-0745
One of the North End's anchors is QFC. Although part of a national chain -- Kroger -- the store gives the impression it was built with Mercer Island residents in mind. If you are planning a special meal, this is the place to shop. It has a comprehensive wine collection, imported cheeses, a deli for appetizers, an on-site bakery and a Redbox for DVD rentals, making it ideal for one-stop shopping. QFC stocks every grocery conceivable, fresh produce, seafood and meats, and the extras that make the store special – a collection of books and magazines, hostess gifts, houseplants and cut flowers. There is a Starbucks on site with tables so you can drink your latte and eat a freshly made sandwich from the deli before you depart.

What a shame! This has all been true up until this last week. No longer does this QFC feel like a community store "reflecting concerns of the residents". As of the week of October 10, 2011 its just another store in the Kroger chain. Automatic check-out lines have been installed this week complete with a take-out chicken case right in front! Just like Fred Meyer. Any Fred Meyer.
I've been shopping at this grocery since before it became a QFC. I'll be so sad to say goodbye! Especially since the changes in recent years could accurately be characterized as true upgrades. Now this lovely community food store has been most decidedly downgraded!
Alas, I will be shopping at Trader Joes, the MI Albertson's or the South End QFC which still demonstrates a measure of originality and awareness of community ambience.
Ah for the good old days before mediocrity became so insidious, you could actually tell the difference!
