Old tables and desks display stacks of the latest fiction and nonfiction books. Customers can play a game at the chess table or find a wingback chair to browse through a book.</p> <p>One third of the book store's 4,000 square feet is devoted to the children's section. Walls of picture books, a large playhouse, toys, games and books for every group of young readers fill this inviting room. A series of children's story hours are offered throughout the year. Established as a charitable fund-raising society in 1928, the Mercer Island Guild is best known for its annual phoneMore book every spring. The names and addresses for all Island residents and business are collected and reviewed by volunteers in the fall and winter before publication. All proceeds raised from advertising and voluntary contributions for the directory benefit the Seattle Children's Hospital.

The Mercer Island Library is a full-service public library and part of the King County Library System (KCLS). TheMore library was remodeled in the 1990s, and is an important center of learning and culture in the community.
