Islander Middle School

Islander Middle School is the only middle school on Mercer Island and was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2003. LocatedMore on the South End of the Island, the school offers a variety of extra-curricular clubs and sports and is well known for its academic excellence.

In 2009, student MSP test scores were among the top 10 in the state, with 87 percent of students achieving math standards and 91 percent achieving reading standards in 2009. The school's classrooms (2009 staffing) are managed by 57 teachers and 36 specialist teachers and other staff as faculty.

The school campus is composed of three buildings, including two large gyms, auditorium and a popular student commons. As with most Island schools, the PTSA is very active here and sponsors a popular ski swap in the fall.

The school is unique in its administration by two principals, Aaron Miller and Mary-Jo Budzius.

South Mercer Playfields

The South Mercer Playfields are located on the south end of the Island between Island Middle School and LakeridegeMore Elementary School. The playfields offer four softball/baseball fields, an all-weather soccer, lacrosse and football practice field, a track, restrooms, a play structure and a small seasonal concession stand. The all-weather field features energy efficient lighting and can be lit at night for walk-up users.
Mercer Island Girls' Lacrosse Club

MI Girls' Lacrosse  Club runs girls' lacrosse teams on the island. It offers elementary, middle and high schoolMore programs divided into Division 1, 2 and JV teams. Because lacrosse is not a sanctioned FIAA school sport, MI Girls' Lacrosse is operated at the club level. The club's board is made up entirely of parent volunteers. As team and equipment fees can be quite hefty, the club offers scholarships for families who can prove a need for financial assistance.

The Mercer Island School District administers the Island's three elementary schools, middle school, high school andMore alternative high school branch, Crest Learning Center.

The school district is one of the Island's most well-regarded institutions and often cited by residents as the reason they live here. Forbes magazine recognized the district in 2009 as one of the ten best nationwide in small U.S. cities. Measured by test performance, Mercer Island is consistently one of the top districts in Washington state. In 2009, district students achieved the second-highest average score on the state's MSP/HSPE proficiency exams.

The district is led by Superintendent Gary Plano, appointed in 2008, and by a five-member school board, each subject to four-year terms.
