First established as the Mercer Island's Civilian Defense Group in 1944, The Mercer Island Fire Department Station 91More serves as headquarters for responding to all fire and emergency needs.

Led by Fire Chief Chris Tubbs, a native Islander, the department's 28 firefighters respond to an average of 2,300 calls for aid every year. The Fire Department works to educate the public about how to prevent fires and quickly and safely put out the fires when they occur. The Fire Marshal's office conducts safety inspections of all structures and events. Fire personnel are also trained in Basic Life Support (BLS) and certified for dive/water rescues.

The Mercer Island Fire Department Station 92 responds to fires and medical emergencies throughout the community,More primarily on the South End. The "South Station" is home to a staff of three firefighters equipped with one fire engine, one midi fire truck and one aid car. The firefighters are on duty seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The station is also outfitted with an emergency power generator to maintain services during power outages, which occasionally affect the Island.
