The Mercer Island Police Department's mission is to uphold the community's reputation as one of the safest places inMore the state, for both residents and visitors alike. In 2010, Police Chief Ed Holmes led a department of 32 sworn officers, three civilians and numerous volunteer-supported public safety operations on a $5.5 million budget.

Surrounded by the waters of Lake Washington, Mercer Island is also the only Eastside city to support a marine patrol unit. Marine patrols are particularly visible in summer months and during the annual SeaFair festivites near the Island's shores.

Most municipal functions on Mercer Island are headquartered at Mercer Island's City Hall complex. City departmentsMore reached from the main entrance include the city manager, clerk, attorney, municipal court, the finance department, development services (building and planning), and human resources.

This is the place where you can get permits for home improvements, pay a utility bill or file a police report.

The main entrance to the Police Department, which also manages the city's emergency preparedness operations, is at the south end of the building.

The city council meets in its chambers at 7pm on the first and third Monday of each month.

City Manager Rich Conrad is the city's top executive, advising city council on budget issues, operations and implementing local policy. He is aided by Glenn Boettcher, assistant city manager, along with the city attorney and various boards and commissions.

Former home of Farmers New World Life Insurance, the offices were renovated in 1989 for government use.
