MI Boys Lacrosse Advances to State Lacrosse Semis

Mercer Island, (15-6-0) advances to a semifinal matchup (and an opportunity to avenge a 8-7 loss on May 5) against rivals Bellevue (18-2-0) on Wednesday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at Islander Stadium.

Mercer Island advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship tournament with an 11-5 Division I quarterfinal win over Bellarmine Prep, Friday at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.  The win propelled the defending state champions into a Wednesday semifinal matchup with Bellevue and to within a single win of their fourth consecutive championship game berth. Mercer Island, playing in front of a partisan home crowd, was held to just a single goal in the first before the Islanders broke the game open with six second-quarter goals for a 7-2 halftime lead. MIHS Girls Water Polo Coach Hall Takes Summer Job

Ryan Hall, current coach of Mercer Island Girls Water Polo team, will coach 15-18 year-old boys at the Rain City Water Polo club.

Ryan Hall, current coach of Mercer Island girls varsity water polo team, has joined the Rain City Water Polo Club coaching staff for the 2012 summer session through August 1. The Bellevue native and Newport High School graduate will be starting on May 28th (meeting WIAA no contact requirements) and will be working with the 18u and 16u men. Hall's coaching roots on Mercer Island extend back to his days in the Midlakes Water Polo’s summer league water polo at Newport Hills in 2005. He has served as an assistant coach at the University of Redlands, helping to lead the Bulldogs to a SCIAC championship in 2009. The journeyman coach took the head coaching job of Mercer Island High School boys water polo team in 2010 and helped guide the men’s …

POLL: Would You Support The Proposed Arena in Seattle's SODO?

The public investment to help finance the project and be repaid via arena revenue would be $200 million if both an NBA and NHL team relocates, or $120 million if only an NBA team relocates.

The effort to build an arena to lure an NBA and possibly an NHL team became official Wednesday morning. Chris Hansen, the Seattle native and San Francisco hedgefund manager, along with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine, announced the parties had reached a memorandum of understanding regarding a new, $490 million arena in the city's SODO District. The MOU must be approved by both the King County Council and the Seattle City Council. Some members of the King County Council have weighed in, including Councilman Reagan Dunn, who represents parts of Bellevue: “I look forward to reviewing the specific details of the arena agreement being transmitted to the Council by the Mayor, County Executive and Mr. Hansen. “…

Five Islanders Named to Boys Lacrosse All-State Team

Connor Bernal, Brent Tsang, Chase York, Alex Robbs and Grant Preisler, Jr. honored as Islanders gear up to face Bellarmine Prep in state quarterfinals on Friday.

The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association announced on Tuesday the 2012 All-State teams for Boys Division I high school lacrosse. Included in the roster of 42 student-athletes from 18 schools were five varsity starters from the Mercer Island Islanders squad: Connor Bernal, Brent Tsang, Chase York, Alex Robbs and Grant Preisler, Jr. Bernal and Tsang were named to the All-State First Team, York to the Second Team and Robbs and Preisler the Third Team. The All-State selections are made by coaches from each of the league’s Division I teams in Washington state. Bellevue High School had the largest number of honorees — eight — and three named to the first team. Mercer Island High School had the second-highest number of honors, …

Bainbridge Knocks Out Girls Lacrosse in State Semifinal

The Lady Islanders will face Lakeside Prep in a consolation match to determine third and fourth place in the state finals at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 19.

Bainbridge advanced to its ninth consecutive Washington Lacrosse Girls State Championship game with a 24–18 semifinal playoff win over Mercer Island Girls Lacrosse on Tuesday at Bainbridge High School. The win over the Islanders sets up a new title opponent for the defending state champion Spartans in Lake Sammamish. Earlier in the day, Lake Sammamish upset Lakeside, which had seven consecutive state championship game appearances and until last year, five consecutive title wins. Bainbridge took an early lead, outscoring the Islanders 13 – 11 in the first half. In the second, the Spartans pulled away scoring 11, while MI managed just seven. Quick and Dirty Boat Gets the Job Done

A pair of Mercer Island High School Juniors recently competed in the Quick and Dirty boat building competition during the Seattle Maritime Festival.

This past weekend Mercer Island High School students Marek Prussak and Ezra Tucker participated in the Quick and Dirty boatbuilding event at the Seattle Maritime Fesitval. Racing a boat of their own design and construction, the pair finished two heats of competition. Being the only student team in the event, Marrek and Ezra were happy with their results. "It was lots of fun," Prussak said. The pair was challenged to build a boat in under five hours with $100 in materials they had purchased themselves, then had to race it against other competitors. Prussak admitted that their design was a little different, but it proved worthy. "It worked pretty well," Prussak said. This was the first time Prussak and Tucker had taken part in the event, and…

Mercer Island Girls Tennis wins KingCo Tournament

Singles and doubles finals featured Mercer Island athletes on both sides of the net.

Mercer Island High School's girls tennis team won the KingCo 3A Tournament on Friday. The singles final pitted Mercer Island's Nora Tan against Melanie Lee in an all Island final. Tan won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The doubles finals was all Mercer Island as well. Sophia Gage/Lydia Venditti beat Caroline Dillon/Gabby Venditti 7-6, 6-4. The Mercer Island doubles team of Ashley Larson/Jamie Mounger beat a tough Juanita team to earn 4th place and earn a trip to Districts. Mercer Island singles player Carissa Ham placed 5th and will serve as the alternate at Districts.

Mercer Island Girls Drop Rival Issaquah

Girls team advances to state lacrosse semifinals.

Mercer Island advanced to the semifinals of the Washington Lacrosse Girls State Championship tournament with a 21 - 10 quarterfinal victory over Issaquah, Friday at Skyline High School in Sammamish.  The quarterfinal win over #4 Issaquah sets up a semifinal berth for the #5 Islanders with #1 Bainbridge, which won its Thursday quarterfinal, on Tuesday.  The location and time has not yet been determined.  The winner advances to the state title game on Saturday, May 19.  The Islanders' Tyler Sherper scored seven goals, matching her season's best regular season performance.  The junior midfielder scored seven goals three other times this season.  Dulce more had career-high 10 points in the game, delivering four goals and six assists.  It was …

Mercer Island girls dispatch Holy names, advances to state lax quarterfinals

Team advances to state quarterfinals with win.

Mercer Island advanced to the Washington Girl's Lacrosse State Championship quarterfinals with an 18 - 6 opening round playoff win over Holy Names, Tuesday at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.  The #5 Islanders now 10-2-1 (9-2-1 in regular season play) take on #4 Issaquah, which won its opening round game against #13 Klahowya, in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday.  The location and time will be determined later on Wednesday.  MI took control of the #12 Cougars from the beginning as the Islanders were led by Elena Skouras with five goals and Tyler Sherper and Dulce Moll who each tallied four.   For Holy Names, Wendy Donier led the Cougars in scoring with four goals and grabbed six ground balls.  Katie Arthofer had 11 saves in goal.  Holy …

Bethke's hat Trick Lifts Bellevue Past Mercer Island in Boys Lacrosse

The win was the ninth consecutive win and the15th of the season for the second-place Wolverines.

Dole Johnson had two goals and two asssits for the Wolverines and Sam Leggett and Dakota Jones combined for nine ground balls. Goaltender Austin Boyd kept Bellevue in place for the win with 22 saves in goal.
