MI PTA Announces 2011-2012 Reflections Art Contest Winners

Award-winning art will be on display tonight at the annual Mercer Island PTA Reflections awards ceremony tonight at 7 p.m. in the MIHS Auditorium.

Local art and musical student talent will be on display at 7 p.m. tonight in Mercer Island High School of the National PTA Reflections Art Program Mercer Island PTA Council Awards.  The Reflections Program is a National PTA and WSPTA cultural arts competition. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. This year's theme is "Diversity means ... ". "We were proud to send many of the outstanding winners to represent our district to the state competition," said MI PTA Council Reflection co-chair Ivy Suzuki-Jaecks. Mercer Island Community Harvest Dinner a Healthy Success

Three local organizations bring Island residents together through food.

The Mercer Island Community Harvest Dinner put on by Mercer Island PTA group MI Food Revolution, TENDER: farmers, cooks, eaters, and Experience Food Project on Thursday, Sept. 22, brought a huge turnout. So much so, in fact, that the event at Islander Middle School, which was prepared to serve 200 people, filled to capacity almost before they were done prepping the food. Doors opened for dinner at 6pm and by 6:25pm, families were being turned away by droves. According to Linda Floyd, PTA volunteer with MI Food Revolution the Community Dinner is a way to "spur a culture change on the Island with kids and foods." Their ultimate goal is to get fresh, local, organic food into the school cafeterias. Chef Tom French, director of Experience Food …

The Mercer Island Band Boosters Club hosted Tournament of Roses President Richard Jackson and First Lady Sharon on a tour of Mercer Island from the sundeck of a custom 73-foot yacht.

The Mercer Island Band Booster Club members played host to Tournament of Roses President Richard Jackson and First Lady Sharon Jackson last week aboard "Mollie" — a custom 73-foot yacht — on a Lake Washington cruise. Mercer Island is Jackson's third visit of 21 villages, towns and cities around the globe who have pledged to send a marching band to take part on the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Calif. on Jan. 2, 2012. It is estimated that travel costs for the trip from Seattle to Pasadena, which bands or band members must pay, is $1,500 per person.
