President Barack Obama today signed a federal disaster declaration for Snohomish County and 10 other Washington counties for damages and costs suffered during January’s snowstorm. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal aid has been made available to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by a severe winter storm, flooding, landslides, and mudslides from January 14 to Jan. 23. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for midnight tonight through 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, saying gusts of up to 45 mph are expected on Mercer Island. A wind advisory is issued whenever winds of 37 to 39 mph are expected or gusts 45 mph or greater. High winds could cause downed branches and localized power outages. The Washington State Department of Transportation is expecting snow through Snoqualmie Pass tonight and through Saturday afternoon, and advises travelers that visibility could be very low. King County Executive Dow Constantine has cleared the way for free disposal of branches, tree limbs and other wood debris left in the wake of recent wind and snow storms. “We have made it easy for residents to dispose of debris so they can quickly put the storms of last week behind them and move on with life,” said Executive Constantine. Free wood debris recycling for King County residents will be available on Jan. 28-29, and again on Feb. 4-5 at four locations: The collection sites and events are exclusively for wood debris from the recent storms. After taking nearly the entire week off school last week, Mercer Island School District students learned they'll have fewer three-day weekends this spring.
The Mercer Island School district has announced make-up days for the three days lost last week due to snow and icy conditions. The make-up days are March 12, May 25, and the last day of school will be June 15. All of the days were previously scheduled make-up days but occur near notable events or holidays. Monday, March 12 is the day after Daylight Saving Time resumes and clocks are moved one hour forward, while Friday, May 25 falls on Memorial Day weekend. June 15, also a Friday, falls on Father's Day weekend.

The National Weather Service has extended its wind advisory for the Puget Sound are to 4 a.m. Wednesday. Winds between 20 and 30 mph are likely with gusts up to 45 mph. The winds may cause local damage to trees and power lines, with small trees possibly toppling due to satursated soils or recent ice damage, said the advisory. As of 12:40 a.m., Mercer Island has not reported any additional power outages since last Saturday. Over 1,700 homes lost power due to freezing rain and ice last week. Puget Sound Energy customers without power for five or more days may be eligible for a $50 credit on their next bill.
As of Monday morning, Jan. 23, more than 2,050 Renton Puget Sound Energy customers remained without power. That’s down from more than 20,000 Renton-area customers without power last Thursday. PSE may offer a small consolation to those who have been without power for an extended period of time, reported the Associated Press. The utility will add a $50 credit to the power bills of customers who have been without power for five full days or more. Call PSE customer service (1-888-225-5773) to see if you qualify. Garbage and recycling collection is canceled today due to inclement weather.
Allied Waste Services, a Republic Services Company, will not collect garbage on Friday, recycling and yard waste from its customers on Mercer Island, Bellevue and the Eastside due to inclement weather. Residential collection of recycle, yard waste and garbage is suspended but critical commercial accounts will be serviced on a limited basis. Weather-related service disruptions are made on a day-to-day basis. According to the press release, residents should put out a double load on their regular collection day next week.
