Wine Pick of the Week: 09 Vine & Sun Red Wine, Columbia Valley

Cork Dork columnist Chris Nishiwaki recommends a fine second-label red wine from Woodinville's Barons V that punches above it's weight.

Vine & Sun is the second label for Woodinville producers Barons V. But make no mistake about it, this is no junior varsity wine. Consulting winemaker Matthew Loso crafts a muscular Cabernet Sauvignon blend with some Merlot that gives the wine a round and fleshy mid-palate. The structure, complexity and layers of black currants, black cherries and blackberries are suggestive of a wine more luxurious than its $18 price tag. Smoke, spicy oak, graphite and a touch of stony minerality complement the showy fruit qualities. Pair this wine with the wokked luc lac filet mignon with organic arugula and cherry tomatoes at Monsoon East. The wine is available for order online from the winery or through local Mercer Island wine merchants The Olde Wine …

Cork Dork: Wine Deals Spill Over to the New Year

With the holiday season behind us, January is the time to enjoy deals on wines at local restaurants and retailers without long waits.

After the mad rush of mad wine deals to celebrate the holiday season and close out the year comes the hangover. Some wine retailers and restaurants will lick their wounds, rest and prepare for February and the celebratory Valentine’s Day. “All the way through Christmas and New Year, it’s great for cash flow. It’s really fun,” said Nick James, marketing and sales director at Mark Ryan Winery in Woodinville. “January is the time to recollect and prepare for the coming year.” However, if you know where to look, January is the ideal time to order wine out, or stock up on wine with deals aplenty from local wineries, including Mark Ryan, at retailers and restaurants in the region. Continuing their monthly featured wineries, Italianissimo in …

The Thanksgiving feast presents salty, spicy, rich, fruity and sweet flavors. Oi! Where to begin! First of all, ideally, you will be surrounded with many friends and family during Thanksgiving dinner. Plan for a bottle a person. This will allow you to pair each course with a different wine, if necessary. If Thanksgiving dinner is …
