Working Washington Attracts 200 to Reichert Protest

The protesters blocked traffic at times in downtown Mercer Island.

Protesters came with signs, songs and even dancing in the streets in an effort to send their message to the Town Center offices of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert (R, WA-8) for most of Thursday morning. Over 200 protesters gathered at the intersection of SE 28th Street and 78th Avenue SE to call for legislative action to create local jobs. Calls of "We need jobs! Jobs, jobs jobs!" were occasionally met by good-natured banter from a small Tea Party counterprotest, yelling back "Ask Obama!" and "God help us!"    Several protesters occupied the intersection around 10 a.m., temporarily blocking the street until Mercer Island Police arrived to move the crowd back to the sidewalk. The r eason to picket Reichert is he never has open meetings with his constituents. Over the years, I have repeatedly called and asked when he planned to hold a meeting. His staff always has the same answer- "we do not have that information at this time". Perhaps if he had a meeting we would not have to picket. Other Congressional reps have meetings.
