Mercer Island Police are investigating a total of 19 bottles of Champagne stolen from the wine aisle of the South-end QFC after the latest theft was reported on April 26. Police believe the suspect — described as black woman, 5 foot 6 to 5 foot 8 in height, 160-180 pounds — first struck on the morning of April 16, as a store surveillance video indicated she removed 13 bottles of Moet Chandon and Veuve Clicquot Champagne at around 7:30 a.m. On April 24, the same woman returned at 7:30 a.m. and took an additional 6 bottles of the same brands, valued at $377.94. Last fall, Mercer Island residents dropped off nearly 140 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted drugs from their homes.
The Mercer Island Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as part of a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative this Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall. Mercer Island Police will accept expired, unused, and unwanted medications, including prescription drugs, at the Mercer Island City Hall loading dock located on the lower level of the West side of the building. The service is free and anonymous — no questions asked. Mercer Island Police responded Tuesday to an early morning argument at a home on the 2000 block of 82nd Avenue SE between a 38-year old man and a 40-year-old Bellevue woman. The woman — who was drunk when she arrived at the residence — sought to confront the man over another relationship the resident was allegedly having with someone else, and began kicking a glass door of the home at around 1:30 a.m. Fearing for his safety, a visiting friend from Missoula, Montana then pepper sprayed the woman. Police are investigating reports of vandalized car tires at Mercer Island High School, flattened by road tacks. Mercer Island Police report three vehicles parked in the high school parking lot on Jan. 24 were deliberately targeted by unknown suspects during school hours. All three of the victims are teacher assistants and help the high school enforce parking restrictions there by issuing parking citations. One of the victims, a 16-year-old MIHS student, found a road tack stuck into the rear passenger-side tire of the Mercedes-Benz C300 he drove to school, causing it to go flat. The Mercer Island Police Department is warning residents to remain vigilant to the threat of fraud, after several residents were targeted by strangers using counterfeit checks — and leaving the victims to pay their banks back. Police Detective Peter Erickson said criminals are targeting residents with promises of easy money for a modicum of work and unexpected windfalls of cash, in exchange for a seemingly small financial transaction with their bank or local financial institution. A local woman driving on First Hill the morning of Dec. 1 hit a pedestrian, causing injuries. The woman, driving a XC70 Volvo northbound SE 72nd Street, tried to turn right on 24th Ave. SE at around 10:05 a.m. and struck a pedestrian near a crosswalk at the stop sign. The pedestrian, who only spoke Mandarin Chinese, later told police through a translator that she noticed heavy traffic on SE 24th St. and entered the crosswalk, when the Volvo hit her. The driver disputed that claim, stating the woman had struck the side of her vehicle. Police were unable to determine who was at fault in the accident.
