Bellevue, Mercer Island Shift to 9th Congressional District In Bipartisan Proposal

Bellevue and Mercer Island would fall under the 9th Congressional District under under a bipartisan proposal introduced Wednesday. Congressman David Reichert who has been representing Bellevue and Mercer Island, would represent a different 8th District.

Bellevue would have new representation in Congress under a bipartisan proposal introduced today by the The Washington State Redistricting Commission. Bellevue, which has been represented by Congressman Dave Reichert of Auburn since 2005, would be in the 9th Congressional district, currently represented by Congressman Adam Smith, a Democrat from Tacoma. Reichert's local offices are based on Mercer Island. The proposed 9th Congressional district includes Mercer Island, parts of Seattle, and goes down to Renton, SeaTac and Federal Way and includes the Port of Tacoma. According to the demographic information on the Washington State Redistricting Commission website, the proposed 9th would be the most racially diverse in the state, with slightly…

Well, I was surprised: Bellevue and Mercer Island would be in the most racially diverse district in the proposed 9th with a population of 50.33 percent people of color.   more ›

Reichert Protest Part of Nationwide Howl Over Jobs

Constituents in mainly Republican districts across the U.S. voiced their frustration over jobs and unemployment directly — when they could — with their congressional representative this month.

Last week's protest at the Mercer Island offices of GOP Rep. Dave Reichert appears to be part of a nationwide outpouring of anger, according to the Huffington Post. The Huffington Post's Tyler Kingkade linked to Mercer Island Patch's story and video late last week on over 200 protesters — along with several other protests, town halls and fundraisers across the U.S. — where constituents voiced demands that Congress focus on jobs rather than trying to reduce the deficit. Republican legislators appear to be the focus during Congress' summer break in August after their "Cut, Cap and Balance" budget plan failed and a compromise was struck to raise the debt limit in exchange for spending cuts. The wave of protest is reminiscent of the uproar …

19 incumbents in the house seems like a big number (and it is, relative to other years of incumbents losing) but it's tiny compared to the 435 total that "serve" there. This is one thing wrong with our system.....it's all about getting re-elected. Even in terrible times, only 19 don't get brought back. That's why Schulz is right when he called to halt $$$ to the candidates/parties (see http://on.…   more ›

Working Washington Attracts 200 to Reichert Protest

The protesters blocked traffic at times in downtown Mercer Island.

Protesters came with signs, songs and even dancing in the streets in an effort to send their message to the Town Center offices of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert (R, WA-8) for most of Thursday morning. Over 200 protesters gathered at the intersection of SE 28th Street and 78th Avenue SE to call for legislative action to create local jobs. Calls of "We need jobs! Jobs, jobs jobs!" were occasionally met by good-natured banter from a small Tea Party counterprotest, yelling back "Ask Obama!" and "God help us!"    Several protesters occupied the intersection around 10 a.m., temporarily blocking the street until Mercer Island Police arrived to move the crowd back to the sidewalk. The protest is the third in a month targeting Reichert primarily for his …

The r eason to picket Reichert is he never has open meetings with his constituents. Over the years, I have repeatedly called and asked when he planned to hold a meeting. His staff always has the same answer- "we do not have that information at this time". Perhaps if he had a meeting we would not have to picket. Other Congressional reps have meetings. Why does ours totally ignore the voters? Does …   more ›

Jobs is the Theme as Protesters Rally Again at Reichert Office

Around 100 people waved signs and shouted slogans in front of U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert's office on Mercer Island as onlookers shouted support and passing motorist honked horns in support.

Protesters lined 78th Ave. SE again near U.S. Representative Dave Reichert's office Wednesday, demonstrating against what they viewed as inaction in Congress to address unemployment.  The protest, one of 250 organized nationwide by left-leaning political action group MoveOn.org, featured a gathering of constituents and political activists who wanted to share their stories of how joblessness has affected them, their families, and their communities on the Eastside and the Seattle and Tacoma area. Billed as part of the "American Dream Movement", MoveOn.org-partner Center for Community Change organizer Rich Stolz said the "day of action" was an appeal to various members of congress to focus on things they could do to spur job creation. "We …
