Video evidence of the theft was provided to police. Purse stolen at community center A woman contacted police after her purse was stolen and later found in a trash can at the community center, minus cash, gift cards, credit cards and identification. The woman had left the purse sitting on a chair for approximately 15-20 minutes. When she returned the purse was gone. It's an old saw -- that "it takes a village" to raise a child or get a tough job done. It was the latter on the night of April 5. It began at 7:45 p.m. when 72-year-old Bob, in advancing stages of Alzheimer's Disease, put on 3 layers of clothing and slipped out the door of his Mercer Island home for a walk -- without anyone knowing it. Once his absence was discovered, his wife and two of his adult kids began car searches of the immediate area, to no avail. 911 was called around 8:50 p.m. and the police went into gear with 3 squad cars scouring every inch of the Island. Officer John Haraway took charge of the search, and assured us that "in 99.99 percent of these cases" the missing is found. Yet, by 11 p.m. still no Bob. The King …

Officer Michael Vickers was named Officer of the Year by his peers at a Feb. 17 awards ceremony.
The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) held its annual awards ceremony at City Hall on Feb. 17 in recognition of individual achievements of officers — including Officer of the Year — as well as other City staff and departments for significant contributions to the mission of the police force. "All the recipients this year certainly earned them, as they have in the past," said MIPD Chief Ed Holmes. The awards were divided into two categories: recognition conferred by police senior staff, and those elected to the honor by the entire police department. The King County Medical Examiner released the name of the man who died after being struck by a passing vehicle this week. He was Larry Lunden, 90, of Mercer Island.
Larry Lunden, 90, of Mercer Island, was the pedestrian who died a day after being struck by a car on Island Crest Way, the King County Medical Examiner reported Saturday. The man died of his injuries at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Friday, a day after a passing car struck him in the 4700 block of Island Crest Way around 5 p.m. Thursday just before he reached the sidewalk at the location of an old crosswalk that has been moved, according to a report by the Mercer Island Reporter. A man who answered Lunden's phone said that the family declined to speak at this time.

Mercer Island City Council approved an ordinance Monday night intended to prevent underage drinking by fining local homeowners — with few exceptions — where teens 18 and younger were found drinking alcohol. The civil ordinance is the first of its kind in the state. The council voted 6-1 to hold persons responsible by having to pay a fine for failing to prevent underage drinking at gatherings on property they own or otherwise control. Police say the woman was intoxicated and was arrested after injuring a man during a domestic dispute.
Mercer Island Police arrested a 45-year-old woman suspected of assaulting a man in a domestic dispute involving a knife Monday afternoon. Police were called to the 3700 block of 78th Ave. S.E. shortly after 3 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance possibly involving a knife or gun, according to a department report. They found both the man and the woman had “injuries/lacerations.” The man told police that the woman had assaulted him and damaged his truck, smashing the passenger side mirror and damaging the radio antennae, the report said. He also said that the woman stabbed herself with a knife. Police took an 8-inch kitchen knife into evidence, along with digital photographs of the crime scene.
